Knowledge & Industry

Blackwater

Knowledge & Industry is a Union battlecarrier whose pursuit of Marcell’s force helps shape the battle in the shoal zone below Island Fredrick. First identified as the lead ship in a search flotilla, it advances under fire while Marcell’s ships try to draw the Union formation away from their main body. Its eventual disablement opens a route to boarding and recovery, making the carrier both a formidable pursuer and a prize that the Tharcian side seeks to take rather than merely destroy.

Identification and pursuit

Marcell identifies Knowledge & Industry as the battlecarrier leading the Union search efforts. His orders divide the response: a breakaway force is to draw the pursuers away from the main body, while Roland Horn carries out a separate mission. The diversion force is also instructed to cripple or destroy the battlecarrier and its flotilla if an opportunity arises. Knowledge & Industry therefore enters the encounter not as an incidental vessel, but as the focal target in a plan that must protect the rest of the force while redirecting the enemy.

The search intensifies as Union ships comb the minefield. The vessels reported in the area include reconnaissance cruisers, corvettes, destroyers, and another battlecarrier. Marcell responds by ordering a sequence of missiles—two mine layers followed by an anti-ship missile—with all three aimed at the lead vessel. The evidence establishes that Knowledge & Industry is at the head of the search, though it does not state the precise outcome of this particular missile attack.

Battle in the shoal zone

During the ensuing engagement, Knowledge & Industry continues to close on Marcell’s ships while firing missiles. Its approach is dangerous even as the Tharcian formation attempts to use the surrounding ships and conditions to limit the Union capital ships’ ability to bring their largest guns to bear. Marcell’s fleet is under pressure from more than one direction: Knowledge & Industry approaches from above, while its sister ship Prosperity & Labor comes in laterally after searching for Roland and the transport. Reconnaissance cruisers also attempt to jam communications across the Lagrange point.

Marcell’s position among destroyers and other ships shields the opposing capital ships from using their heavy guns against his vessel, but it does not prevent them from sending missiles and Panzerters. Railgun fire pierces the Blackwater’s hull in several places; the damage reaches stairwells and ladders, while Marcell worries that ammunition stores, life support, or engineering could be struck. In this wider engagement, Knowledge & Industry remains a continuing threat, not a ship removed from the battle by the first exchange.

Disablement and boarding

The turning point comes when the Danubia destroys the other Union battlecarrier and then moves toward Knowledge & Industry. Rather than unleash another railgun bombardment, the Danubia approaches the stricken ship and launches boarding pods. Knowledge & Industry’s drive goes dark, leaving it disabled, but the account does not describe its destruction. Its crew instead faces Tharcian marines entering in the pods, while smaller ships and Panzerters pass the capital ship amid the ongoing fighting.

With the cruisers’ drives also disabled and the opposing force’s communications becoming clearer, Marcell turns from fighting to recovery. He orders a line opened to the Danubia, calls for recovery operations to begin, and asks for damage assessments from ships that have disengaged. He also orders his executive officer to bring Duncan Glenn back aboard if he is alive. The change from attack to recovery gives Knowledge & Industry a distinct place in the battle’s ending: it is first a leading pursuer, then a disabled vessel approached for boarding as the Tharcian force begins accounting for its own people and ships.

Role in the battle

Knowledge & Industry’s role links Marcell’s tactical choices to the larger stakes of the shoal-zone battle. Its position at the head of the search makes it the target of a diversion and a missile plan; its persistent advance and missile attacks keep pressure on the Tharcian ships; and the Danubia’s boarding action converts its disablement into an opportunity for recovery. The contrast between the initial aim of crippling or destroying it and the final order to begin recovery captures the battle’s shifting priorities: stopping the enemy remains essential, but what can be recovered after the fighting matters too.
