Hydra warhead

Blackwater

The Hydra warhead is one of three experimental missile types aboard the Blackwater, intended to make a single incoming missile harder for automated point defenses to handle. Its defining tactic is division: near the defenses’ optimal engagement range, the missile breaks into as many as twelve smaller missiles carrying thermobaric payloads.

Design and operation

The Hydra was named for the mythical creature that grows two heads when one is severed. Its designers relied on a fairly precise understanding of the range at which Union point defenses were optimized to engage targets. When its rangefinder detected that it was nearing that range, the missile would discard its booster and split into as many as twelve smaller missiles. Their reduced size meant smaller payloads, but each used the same thermobaric warhead as a torpedo.

Place in the Blackwater’s arsenal

The Blackwater carried twelve Hydra warheads among thirty-six experimental missiles. The ship’s missile inventory also included anti-ship missiles and minelayers, while the other experimental payloads comprised a dozen Sandcaster warheads and a dozen jamming warheads. The Hydra therefore served a different purpose from the Sandcaster, which was designed to damage Panzerters, and the jamming warhead, which flooded radio waves with interference.

Tactical purpose and significance

The Hydra’s design turns the enemy’s own defensive range into a trigger for multiplying the incoming threats. Rather than relying on one missile to penetrate a point-defense screen, it divides into a group of smaller thermobaric missiles as that screen comes into play. Its name captures the tactical logic: an attempted response to the original threat may leave defenders facing many targets at once.
