Prosperity & Labor

Blackwater

Prosperity & Labor is a Union battlecarrier whose pursuit of Roland and a military transport brings it into range of the Tharcian battlecruiser Danubia. Built to dominate smaller vessels and to fight larger opponents alongside other ships, it is instead caught by a ship whose armament is distributed for fire across multiple directions. The resulting destruction turns the battlecarrier from an advancing threat into one of the most conspicuous wrecks left above the shoal zone.

Identity and Intended Role

The name Prosperity & Labor identifies one of the Union battlecarriers involved in the battle in the shoal zone. The evidence distinguishes its purpose from that of a ship designed to defeat a Tharcian battlecruiser on its own: it was meant to bully smaller vessels and combine with other ships against more formidable opponents. Its defeat is therefore also a failure of the conditions on which its design depended, as it faces Danubia without the advantage of a coordinated fight against a larger adversary.

The battlecarrier’s configuration concentrates its railguns in a belt line just ahead of its engineering section. That arrangement lets it point all its guns forward or astern while still launching Panzerters rapidly. The design couples offensive concentration with the ability to deploy its craft, but offers a marked contrast to Danubia’s overlapping and cascading fields of fire across both dorsal and ventral surfaces. Where Prosperity & Labor can direct all its guns along the ship’s axis, Danubia can bring all of hers forward or 75 percent of them in almost any other direction.

Pursuit and Approach

Prosperity & Labor enters the immediate action as Roland and Charlotte make their way through a graveyard of civilian ships and pirate vessels. Roland cannot turn back without risking being cut off, and asks Charlotte to identify the battlecarrier. She reads its name from the side of the vessel: Prosperity & Labor. This brief identification places the ship at the edge of Roland’s escape route, where its presence is part of the danger he must navigate rather than a distant detail on a tactical display.

The carrier approaches laterally while its sister ship Knowledge & Industry advances from above. Both are part of the Union pressure on Marcell’s forces, while the last pair of reconnaissance cruisers attempt to jam communications in the Lagrange point. The battlecarriers’ heavy guns cannot be brought to bear freely while Marcell’s position among destroyers and other ships constrains them, but they can still send missiles and Panzerters. Prosperity & Labor’s role in the action thus combines pursuit of Roland and the transport with pressure on the wider Tharcian formation.

Destruction by Danubia

The turning point comes when Danubia rises from the shoal zone. Marcell recognizes the ship as the sister vessel of the lost battlecruiser Vespa, a moment of apparent rescue that gives way to the realization that Danubia has arrived to fight. Prosperity & Labor is caught by the difference between a battlecarrier’s concentrated firing arcs and a Tharcian gunship’s broad, overlapping coverage. The narration compares the contrast in scale and function to daggers against a broadsword: the Union carrier is exposed to an opponent able to direct heavy fire across its approach.

Danubia’s railgun batteries strike through Prosperity & Labor’s frame. The bombardment ignites magazines and fuel lines and compromises the ship’s internal atmosphere. Although the carrier launches some of its Panzerters, they flee the destruction rather than remain to fight. As further shells pass through the vessel, its structure gives way: the forward section separates from the railgun belt and engineering decks, and Danubia’s final strike shears the ship in half. The destruction is decisive, not a disabling blow from which the carrier can rejoin the battle.

Wreck and Significance

The later view of the shoal zone confirms the scale of the loss. Prosperity & Labor is no longer an intact combatant but the remnant of a battlecarrier and its small flotilla drifting overhead. Anti-ship missiles from Danubia have broken its spine; railgun fire has shattered much of its armor and damaged its internal structure. The ship’s condition makes visible the mismatch between its intended role and the battle it was forced to fight: its designers expected it to overwhelm smaller vessels or cooperate against larger ones, not to duel a Tharcian battlecruiser on its own.

The wreck also remains part of the battle’s aftermath rather than disappearing with the action. A Union destroyer begins settling into the shoal zone, where the wrecks from the battle, Tharcian and Union alike, will eventually come to rest. Prosperity & Labor’s transition from pursuing Roland to drifting among the battle’s debris gives the ship a compact narrative arc: a named threat identified during flight, an advancing participant in the wider engagement, and finally a material record of the Union fleet’s defeat by Danubia.
