Yellow

Erasure

Yellow is a friend and partner of Van Go Jenkins, identified by his light skin and red hair. The attention his hair attracts and his exchanges with Van Go give him a small but distinct presence: he joins in their laughter, jokes back when insulted, and voices caution when Van Go turns toward riskier ways of making money.

Identity and Introduction

Yellow’s nickname comes from his light skin and reddish hair. Van Go notes that girls make much of the hair, but describes Yellow as all right and names him, alongside Tito, as one of his partners. This introduction establishes both the conspicuous feature by which others recognize Yellow and the loyalty implied by Van Go’s casual description of their friendship.

Friendship and Conflict

At school, Yellow is talking with Van Go when they laugh at a teacher’s manner of speaking. The teacher joins their laughter, but the moment turns against Van Go: he goes quiet and stares at the man after the man mocks his toughness and predicts that he will be unable to read a job application. Yellow is present in the exchange, though the teacher’s rebuke is directed at Van Go.

Later, outside the pool hall, Yellow meets Van Go and Tito. When Van Go dismisses their talk of candy and proposes getting real money, Yellow answers that they could get shot for the trouble. Van Go calls him a coward; Yellow replies with a joke about Van Go’s mother. The banter keeps their friendship lively, but the disagreement also marks a difference in their immediate responses to danger: Yellow names the risk, while Van Go treats that caution as weakness.

What Yellow Notices

In another exchange, Yellow challenges Van Go’s account of shooting baskets and asks what really happened. Van Go insists that the baskets are the whole story and tells him to stop asking; Tito, listening from behind, then asks what is going on. Yellow’s question places him among the people who do not simply accept Van Go’s explanation, although the available account does not disclose what prompted the suspicion or establish what actually happened. His role is thus brief but recurring: he is a companion who shares Van Go’s humor, pushes back against his bravado, and notices when his stories invite questions.
