Captain James Hollister

Firestarter

Captain James Hollister is the Shop officer who helps arrange Andrew McGee and Charlie McGee’s planned departure for Hawaii, but his cooperation carries a visible cost. Once introduced as the man in charge, he becomes a practical intermediary in Andy’s escape plan; later, he appears mentally shattered, with the effects of Andy’s push described as a ricochet inside his brain.

Position and First Encounter

At their first meeting, Hollister identifies himself to Andy and says he is in charge. Andy answers with an intentionally mild smile while privately struggling to keep his tension concealed. Hollister then tells him that he has sad news, establishing the encounter as one in which official authority and personal pressure meet face to face.

Hollister’s account of Charlie’s recent tests gives Andy alarming new information. He reports that Charlie had refused to light fires but has now completed three tests; in one, she set a piece of sheet steel alight for four seconds at a spot temperature above twenty thousand degrees. Hollister says Patrick Hockstetter is delighted by the result. Andy’s shock and worsening headache sharpen the news into a measure of what the Shop has elicited from his daughter while keeping her apart from him.

Arranging the Departure

Hollister later lays out a detailed plan for moving Andy and Charlie. He will change their departure from Saturday to Wednesday and arrange for them to travel to Hawaii on an army transport plane. He will accompany them, while two Shop agents are also to travel; those agents will meet the group at Andrews. Hollister intends to ask Puck where the aircraft will refuel when he calls to change the flight date.

The plan also depends on managing appearances and controlling the timing of the people involved. Hollister has a note for Charlie, which he says he will deliver after speaking with Puck and in a way that will not arouse undue suspicion. He will also arrange for John Rainbird to be in San Diego the following Wednesday. At Andy’s request, Hollister repeats these points in sequence. Andy accepts the plan but privately doubts that it can work, imagining that failure could leave him and Charlie dead in the transport plane’s cargo bay.

Deterioration and Narrative Role

When Hollister comes to Andy’s apartment below the north plantation house, the contrast with his earlier self is severe. A year before, he had been elderly but tough, hale, and shrewd, with the composed authority of someone holding a shotgun at a duck blind. Now he walks in a distracted shamble. His formerly iron-gray hair has turned nearly white and fine; his mouth twitches, his fingers move aimlessly, and his eyes look puzzled and childlike. Those eyes sometimes give way to sideways glances marked by suspicion and fear.

The narration directly links this collapse to the echo of Andy’s push, which has become a ricochet moving through Hollister’s brain with deadly force. His altered condition gives the escape plan a human consequence beyond its immediate danger: Andy’s ability to control other people can secure cooperation, but its effects do not simply end when the arrangement is made. Hollister’s transformation—from a composed official who can enumerate a complicated itinerary to a frightened, mentally disordered visitor—makes that cost visible.
