Broken Core
GunsoulBroken Core is a condition in which a cultivator’s core is damaged, with consequences that can persist even after the body recovers. Its clearest case is Arc: her flesh grew back after her bullet-core was planted in Headshot Forge, but the core did not heal. Because Authorities are manifestations of a cultivator’s core and will, that injury left Arc unable to control her Authority. Her condition turns a damaged core from an inward affliction into an outward hazard, one capable of killing people who enter its reach.
Definition and Known Limits
Yuan Guang first encounters the condition through Holster, who communicates with mudra signs. Orient interprets her meaning: Miss Holster believes that the Gunsoul’s core is broken. Yuan initially struggles to make sense of the idea. The only ways he knows of losing a core are breaking an Unspeakable Vow or undergoing a Human Pillar procedure, and both prevent a user from using techniques, much less an Authority. His understanding therefore supplies a stark comparison, not a complete explanation of Arc’s injury: a damaged core can coexist with an active, dangerous Authority.
The distinction matters because Arc does not describe her problem as a simple inability to use power. She says she no longer controls her Authority, and explains that the Ammobog is not its natural state. The core’s damage compromises control and containment while leaving the Authority active. Broken Core is thus associated with a failure of regulation: the power remains present, but its owner cannot reliably govern its effects.
Arc’s Injury and the Failed Recovery
When Yuan asks whether her core is broken, Arc confirms that she cannot control her Authority. She traces the condition to a confrontation years earlier with a powerful cultivator who worshipped death. Arc defeated him, but he destroyed her body and damaged her soul before going to the Nowhere. The fight also involved the opponents’ Authorities manifesting in the same place and clashing, a collision that damaged them.
Afterward, Arc’s squire, unaware of the cultivators’ immortality, planted her bullet-core in the land. Arc’s flesh grew back and healed, but her bullet-core remained damaged. The contrast exposes the limit of bodily restoration in her case: recovery of flesh did not restore the core or return control of the Authority. Yuan guesses that Arc uses feng shui to draw on the local leyline and stabilize it. Arc confirms that she must do so; without that support, she leaks qi until she loses consciousness, then her Authority reactivates when she wakes.
Yuan offers to help, reasoning that if a core can be cracked it ought to be repairable, and suggests that Orient and Holster might have ideas. Arc answers that she has tried everything. Her response closes off the hopeful inference that damage must be reversible simply because it can be described as damage. The evidence establishes Yuan’s willingness and Arc’s repeated failure, but does not identify a cure or show that one is possible.
Authority, Territory, and Consequences
Arc’s damaged core has consequences beyond her own survival. Authorities normally restrain themselves within closed boundaries to maximize their potency; Arc’s instead has open borders. She cannot stop qi from leaking out, and her Authority spreads widely before thinning. Even so, it taints everything within a five-kilometer radius of her. Her reliance on feng shui is an ongoing means of stabilizing the Authority, not evidence that the core itself has healed.
Headshot Forge attacks anyone caught within its premises unless Arc focuses on sparing them. In Arc’s words, this makes her a miles-wide unnatural disaster. The danger is especially severe for Scraps, including the Bullet Church cultists Yuan encounters: because they lack a strong qi signature for Arc’s Authority to latch onto, she cannot react to their presence before the Authority kills them. The threat is therefore not simply that Arc may choose to attack. Her impairment makes the Authority’s automatic response deadly to people she may not detect in time to spare.
Arc’s Choice and the Condition’s Significance
Arc identifies three possibilities: kill herself, become a mobile disaster, or remain where she is. She chooses to stay put. That decision confines the danger geographically without resolving it; Headshot Forge remains an unnatural and lethal territory, but Arc does not carry the malfunctioning Authority elsewhere. The corpses Yuan finds near her and the cultist killed upon entering her territory make the cost of that arrangement visible. Yuan infers that some victims were simply within range when the Authority activated.
For Yuan, investigating Arc’s condition is more than an attempt to aid another Gunsoul. He is curious about what happened to her because it may give him insight into his own condition. Broken Core consequently occupies two roles in the encounter: it is the cause of Arc’s loss of control and isolation, and a question through which Yuan tests the limits of what he knows about cores, techniques, and Authorities. Arc’s case offers no easy answer. Her body has recovered, her core has not, and the power tied to that core continues to endanger people around her.
