Third Coil
GunsoulThe Third Coil is a cultivation threshold that requires a substantial influx of Qi and transforms what a cultivator can do in combat. Its importance lies not only in increased strength: securing the resources to advance can pull a practitioner into dangerous bargains, while crossing it places the practitioner beyond the reach of ordinary opponents. Yuan Guang’s pursuit of the Third Coil therefore joins a practical struggle for pills with a larger shift in his capabilities and understanding of the Gun Path.
Requirements and Resources
Advancement to the Third Coil is tied to consuming a large quantity of Qi at once. A qi pill can supply what a cultivator needs, making access to pills consequential rather than incidental. When Gayak tries to hire Yuan Guang to fight the Metallists, the offer includes clean pills as well as guns and ammunition; Yuan Guang is wary of the dangerous assignment, but the chance of obtaining a Third Coil qi pill makes the price worth considering. The prospect of advancement gives a mercenary contract leverage over him even when its risks exceed his usual work.
A pill is not the only possible source. A cultivator unable to secure one would usually kill a spirit-beast and consume its core as a substitute. Gayak points out a more disturbing parallel: a Gunsoul’s bullet-core functions like a spirit-beast’s core, so ingesting one could provide the concentrated Qi needed by someone on the Path of the Gun. Yuan Guang recognizes the possibility as frightening, especially because Revolver could have killed him for his core but chose to spare him. The mechanics of advancement thus make other cultivators potential resources, placing a predatory possibility beside the ordinary pursuit of pills and beast cores.
Training and the Threshold
Arc makes advancement a condition of deeper instruction. Although she vows to teach Yuan Guang the cultivation she knows, she warns him that the initial lessons only bring him up to speed: he must return with a qi pill and cross the Third Coil before she teaches him the real material. Her demand gives his training a concrete gate. He has found a formidable teacher on his own Path, but access to her full knowledge depends on reaching the next level.
The gap between levels is also reflected in the wider hierarchy of Gunsouls. Arc is a Fifth Coil Gunsoul, a warrior Yuan Guang regards as one of the Unmade World’s greatest; she has defeated a foe capable of wiping out cities. Revolver, despite his experience and power, has not yet crossed the Fifth Coil. These comparisons situate the Third Coil within a longer ladder of advancement without making it an endpoint: it marks a major step, while higher Coil levels remain associated with still greater power and expertise.
Yuan Guang’s route through cultivation is not simply the accumulation of techniques. He accepts Arc’s oath as her disciple and commits himself to opposing Manhattan and followers of the Nuclear Path, while pursuing the strength needed for revenge. Later, Arc tells him that he must cross the Third Coil before receiving her advanced teaching. The threshold therefore stands between preliminary instruction and the fuller cultivation he wants, binding spiritual progress to a conflict that continues to shape his choices.
Capabilities and Physical Change
Yuan Guang’s later Third Coil-level body demonstrates how far the threshold moves him from ordinary human limits. After further cycling unlocks its potential, he can leap with such force that he must restrain himself to avoid flying too far. By combining those jumps with Recoil Fist, he can land on an enemy vehicle, unleash the technique, and spring toward another target. His steel skin turns incoming projectiles into a negligible threat, and the Plastic Men attacking him are overwhelmed by the difference in strength.
His sharpened reflexes make the disparity just as visible. Rubber bullets seem to travel in slow motion; Yuan Guang often does not bother to dodge because they cannot harm him. First Coil cultivators among his opponents barely register as threats. A Recoil Shockwave crushes them, and harpoons shatter against his chest. The Third Coil is described as the point at which cultivators move beyond ordinary people’s reach, and Yuan Guang’s experience makes that abstraction immediate: attacks that would once have defined a battle no longer endanger him.
His transformation also extends beyond strength and reflexes. After resolving to pursue the Gun Path, Yuan Guang finds that his cycling obstacles disappear, his productivity rises sharply, and bodily changes cease to feel discomforting. He sees a body of sleek metal, muscles resembling servos, circuitry in place of nerves, and lead lungs that breathe air and exhale gunsmoke. His bullet-core is protected beneath stainless black steel, while scope-like eyes and a network of openings in his palms and feet accompany his altered form. The narrative connects these changes to his acceptance and continued cultivation, though it does not reduce the transformation to a single mechanical effect of the Third Coil.
Expanded Perception and Practical Uses
The Third Coil improves more than Yuan Guang’s capacity to withstand or deliver force. Its enhanced senses help him understand how Qi bullets adapt to the firearm that launches them: his body charges projectiles with different Qi frequencies depending on the weapon used. Arc calls the underlying technique adaptive, and Yuan Guang’s new perceptions let him grasp what she means. His earlier intuition about firearms remains limited for some tasks, but he discovers an aptitude for making metallic objects through Item Materialization.
That aptitude has practical consequences aboard Orient. Yuan Guang helps restore ten additional wagons, doubling the spirit-train’s length, by creating or replicating gears, bolts, pipes, and pistons. He suspects that consuming Gatling Man’s core has also allowed him to assimilate part of his Metallist training. The episode shows advancement working alongside acquired knowledge: Third Coil-enhanced perception helps Yuan Guang understand a technique, while his experience and other influences shape what he can do with it.
Significance
The Third Coil functions as both a power threshold and a pressure point in the story’s cultivation economy. Pills promise a more direct route, spirit-beast cores offer a dangerous substitute, and the discovery that a Gunsoul’s bullet-core can serve a similar purpose raises the stakes of encounters between practitioners. For Yuan Guang, the level’s advantages are concrete—greater strength, resilience, reflexes, and perception—but advancement also opens new forms of work and understanding, from combat to restoring a train.
Its significance is therefore not a simple promise that more power will settle every conflict. The Third Coil can make earlier enemies seem physically insignificant, yet access to it depends on scarce resources, risky choices, and instruction that may be withheld until a cultivator qualifies. Yuan Guang’s progress enlarges his abilities while keeping cultivation tied to obligation, danger, and the decisions through which he defines his path.
