Fourth Coil

Gunsoul

The Fourth Coil is a decisive stage in Yuan Guang’s cultivation on the Gun Path, where advancement means more than gaining power: he must engrave his chosen Path into his soul, weave its script into his bullet-core, and bring body and core into alignment. Crossing the Coil permanently commits him to that Path. The resulting transformation makes firearm-like changes easier and prepares him to use innate techniques, but it also fixes the direction of his future and makes his eventual conflict with The Gun harder to escape.

What the Fourth Coil Requires

Yuan’s approach to the Fourth Coil begins with a soul sutra circuit. Arc explains that surviving the Blackmoon trial has cleared emotional sludge from his Qi circuits and strengthened his spiritual awareness, allowing him to hear the soul’s whispers and align his body with it. Engraving the sutras chosen by the soul is only the first step: he must then weave their scripts into his core. Only after that can he learn innate techniques. The distinction matters because the Fourth Coil is not simply a threshold crossed by accumulating power; it asks the cultivator to make the chosen Path part of the structure of the self.

Arc describes the body, at this point, as a base template. To cross the Coil and engrave an innate technique, a cultivator must customize that template according to the Path. On the Gun Path, this means aligning core and body with a particular kind of firearm. Arc identifies with sniper rifles, while Revolver’s preference is suggested by his name. Yuan therefore faces a bodily transformation shaped by the weapon-form that belongs to him, rather than a generic improvement that would be the same for every cultivator.

That transformation is both physical and spiritual. Before he crosses, Yuan has already begun to change: after his battles with Gayak and Gatling Man, wounds that would ordinarily leave scar tissue instead heal beneath strong, flexible black metal. His veins become steel-colored conduits carrying liquid gunpowder, his muscles feel like triggers and pistons, his lungs roar like engines, and he exhales gunsmoke. These changes make visible what the Fourth Coil formalizes: the Gun Path is remaking his body into a suitable instrument for its techniques.

Training and the Point of No Return

With the History Road competition approaching, Yuan trains without pause. His reasons are immediate as well as long-term: he expects powerful opponents, hopes that strength will make him a more valuable ally to other racers, and wants to be prepared for the contest around the Cube of Natho. He completes his soul sutra circuit by the second day, a pace that pleases Arc. The remaining step is harder. He must keep cycling Qi until his bullet-core fully aligns with the sutra script and perfects the circuit.

Arc warns that this process permanently binds Yuan to the Gun Path and gives him a final chance to quit. Yuan’s answer is already settled. He asks whether the Path will compel him to shoot Slash on sight, but Arc’s warning is not that the commitment itself supplies such a specific command. Rather, she stresses the cost of the choice: the alignment will define his cultivation, and there will be no casual return to another Path once it is complete.

The crossing demands uninterrupted meditation. Arc says that interference could be disastrous, so Yuan must seal himself away until the process is finished or kills him. A metals wagon can increase the amount of Qi available for cycling, and Arc estimates that he may cross within a day. She tempers his pride at the speed of his advancement by distinguishing the Coil stages from the Authority wall: cultivators may pass through the earlier Coils comparatively quickly, but the next barrier can take years, and Elders may remain there for decades. The Fourth Coil is therefore a major breakthrough without being the end of cultivation.

The Body as a Chosen Weapon

Yuan’s transformation gives the Fourth Coil an especially concrete meaning. Arc’s own body demonstrates the danger of the Gun Path: her silver bullet-core has spread tendrils of lead through her flesh and replaced her right shoulder and arm with a mass of barrels and cylinders, ending in a sniper rifle where her hand had been. She warns Yuan that he can still abandon the Path. Her damaged body makes the choice more than an abstract matter of doctrine; firearm alignment can claim and remake living anatomy.

The novel also sets this process beside the Metallist ideal of replacing defective flesh with improved machinery. Yuan recognizes similarities between that doctrine and the Gun Path, even though they are different cultivation routes. His own black-metal skin, gunpowder-carrying veins, and mechanical-feeling muscles resemble bodily replacement, but his advancement is framed through alignment with his soul and chosen Path. The contrast keeps transformation from being only a catalogue of upgrades: the question is not merely what the body can do, but what purpose and discipline it has been shaped to serve.

Innate Techniques and Further Transformation

The Fourth Coil makes innate techniques possible by joining the sutra script to the core. Arc explains that Gun Demon Incarnation temporarily transforms Yuan into his spiritual reflection. While he cycles, his body and bullet-core are forced into alignment with his soul; in the resulting state, he becomes an Infernal, a weapon-demon of gun violence. The power is intoxicating, so Arc advises him to hold onto an emotional anchor and remember what keeps him grounded. The technique thus tests not only whether his body can assume a more powerful form, but whether he can retain control while inhabiting it.

During the transformation, Yuan briefly attains a sense of self-awareness beyond instinct. He understands the kind of gun he wants to be: one whose purpose can include justice, protection of the weak, and punishment of evil. He then returns in a radically altered body, twice his former height, with a long barrel-face, sharp ammunition teeth, a minigun for a left arm, a hot cannon for a right, and iron skulls across his torso. His back thrusters let him fly, while the fire that was once a weakness becomes something his metal body can harness. The scene connects the Fourth Coil’s bodily customization to a moral choice about how such a weapon will be used.

Lasting Consequences

After crossing the Fourth Coil, Yuan finds that altering himself comes more naturally. Because soul and body are aligned with the concept of a firearm and its components, shifting from metal into gunsmoke feels almost effortless by comparison. In that gaseous state, ordinary senses fall away and only spiritual awareness of Qi remains; his gun and clothes merge with the mist as extensions of himself. Yet this new facility is not without limits: he feels fragile, must exert will to keep from breaking apart, and spends considerable Qi maintaining the form.

The commitment also determines the stakes of Yuan’s eventual encounter with The Gun. He concludes that he cannot change Paths: crossing the Fourth Coil has already dedicated him to the Gun Path, and fighting The Gun has become an inevitable outcome of that choice. In the final confrontation, Gun Demon Incarnation becomes the form in which he spends his remaining strength on a single shot. Afterward, he returns in that form without needing to expend Qi to sustain it, his soul no longer dependent on a human-shaped safety vessel. The Fourth Coil therefore marks both a cultivation breakthrough and the beginning of a transformation whose final consequence is a new, enduring mode of being.
