Corrupted Caretaker Spirit
GunsoulThe Corrupted Caretaker Spirit is the Thunderlands’ regional guardian transformed by radioactive contamination into the Rad-Hag, a monstrous embodiment of a landscape’s sickness rather than its cure. Its story distinguishes destroying a corrupted spirit from repairing the territory it represents: even after the Rad-Hag’s body dissolves, the pollution and infection remain, seeking to spread.
Nature and Corruption
A caretaker spirit is the physical incarnation of its region, a vessel through which the land interacts with the outside world. The Thunderlands’ guardian therefore embodies more than a dangerous individual. Its condition reflects the condition of its territory, and the corruption of the one has become inseparable from the corruption of the other.
The deterioration is legible in the region’s Qi. Yuan senses the Thunderlands’ power as golden, sorcerous energy, but strands of green sickness run through it. The air carries poisonous dust that Yuan’s own bullet-core struggles to assimilate, and the ruins near Gatesville feel diseased. These details make the Rad-Hag’s transformation part of a wider environmental injury: the pollution is present in the land, the air, and the spiritual force Yuan attempts to understand.
The contamination is associated with radioactive winds from the nearby ruins. Kyung-sun warns that these winds corrupted the local guardian into a Rad-Hag, turning its Thunderlands into a den of mutants and demons. The trappers avoid hunting there alone. Yuan, despite having faced the Thunderlands before, recognizes that this is a distinct threat and that his limited resources make a confrontation unwise.
Domain and Threat
The Rad-Hag’s power is bound to the Thunderlands it embodies. Yuan senses its source farther west, where the currents resemble the eye of a sandstorm: the closer he approaches the center, the deadlier they become. He judges the corrupted guardian not especially strong, yet still chooses to avoid a fight. Its danger lies not only in personal strength but in its control of a blighted domain where the environment itself has become hostile.
The guardian’s corruption also shapes its understanding of the conflict. During the confrontation, the Rad-Hag blames cultivators for poisoning the earth that gave it life and filling its depths with maggots. Its accusation connects the monstrous condition of the Thunderlands to the actions of people who bring radiation and violence into the world. Yuan answers that killing it will allow it to reincarnate into a better self, but the exchange does not make the Rad-Hag’s destruction equivalent to the land’s recovery.
Purification and Transformation
When the Rad-Hag is weakened, Holster applies a method of purification by working on the spirit as a vessel. She guides its untainted energies into the Spirit-train’s circulatory system while isolating the rot in its heart. The process separates what can still be redirected from what has been corrupted; it does not simply restore the guardian to health.
As this work takes effect, the Rad-Hag’s enormous body shrinks to human size. Its disfigured face briefly rearranges into the beautiful visage it had before radiation poisoned the Thunderlands. Centidead maggots fall away and writhe without their host, while tumors and corroded parts of the spirit crowd the hole in its chest in a futile effort to heal. The temporary return of its former appearance makes the damage visible as a change imposed upon the guardian, not an original feature of its nature.
The Rad-Hag resists, but its body turns to dust and its Qi returns to the Dao. The apparent victory leaves behind a table-sized mass of pallid flesh, tumors, and corrupted Qi, with half-formed faces moving beneath its surface. Yuan asks whether the purification worked; Holster can only confirm the intervention as the mass itself moves toward her. Though nearly harmless, it still seeks to spread.
What Remains
The Rad-Hag’s death does not immediately cleanse the Thunderlands of radiation or centidead infection. A new spirit will not heal the territory at once, although its arrival can be a beginning. The distinction is central to the state: the guardian can be killed, its untainted energies redirected, and its distorted body removed, while the slow consequences of contamination persist in the place it embodied.
The Corrupted Caretaker Spirit thus joins spiritual horror to environmental damage. The green sickness in the golden Qi, the poisoned dust, the mutation of a regional guardian, and the surviving mass of corruption form a sequence in which pollution alters both the land and the being through which the land is known. Holster’s intervention offers a limited act of repair, not a clean reset. The Thunderlands remain wounded, and the remainder’s impulse to spread makes clear that the work of healing cannot end with the Rad-Hag’s defeat.
