First Coil

Gunsoul

The First Coil marks Yuan Guang’s first passage into cultivation, overturning his belief that he could never awaken a core. The breakthrough comes not through years of practice, but in the aftermath of his return from death: Revolver pulls him from a ditch and identifies the bullet lodged in his face as the sign that Yuan has crossed the threshold. What Yuan had regarded as proof of his exclusion becomes the instrument of his awakening.

Identity and First Awakening

Before this moment, Yuan understood himself as a Scrap without a core. When Revolver tells him he has passed through the First Coil, Yuan rejects the claim: he reasons that someone in his condition cannot have advanced. Revolver points to the bullet in Yuan’s face, forcing him to confront the possibility that his body has already undergone a change his old understanding of cultivation cannot explain.

The breakthrough follows Yuan’s resurrection. He recognizes that something has brought him back, and, rather than refuse the hand Revolver offers, he takes it with a firm grip. The First Coil thus begins at a threshold between death and renewed life. Its first proof is bodily and immediate; Yuan has not yet understood what has happened, but Revolver can name the change.

What the Breakthrough Enables

Revolver explains that activating a core means Yuan has passed through the First Coil and should now be able to sense qi. He tells Yuan to close his eyes and focus. Yuan already has a history of trying similar meditative exercises: for years, before this awakening, he practiced in the hope that his core might arise naturally. Now the same kind of concentration produces a different result. He gathers his breath, enters a meditative state, and begins to see for the first time.

The scene distinguishes the breakthrough from the effort that preceded it. Yuan’s old exercises had not awakened him, but they left him able to follow Revolver’s instruction and reach a focused state quickly. The First Coil makes perception possible; practice gives Yuan a way to meet that new capacity.

Revolver’s Guidance and the Path Ahead

Revolver speaks as an experienced cultivator, telling Yuan that he is on his fourth Coil and approaching the fifth. He describes the Fourth Coil as a commitment to a Path, whether adopted or created, that trades versatility for a distinct discipline and innate techniques. Against that later commitment, Yuan’s First Coil is an initial threshold: his core is active, and he can sense qi, but the evidence does not yet associate his awakening with a chosen Path.

This first lesson also establishes Revolver as Yuan’s guide. Their relationship later becomes more than instruction: Revolver saves Yuan from Elder Polio and from the Gun, and Yuan resolves to find a way to free him from the Gun’s curse rather than let that debt go unpaid. When Revolver describes the killings he carries out after becoming the Gun, Yuan responds with sympathy. The early scene of Revolver pulling Yuan from a ditch therefore anticipates a lasting bond built around rescue, instruction, and the debts Yuan refuses to abandon.

Later Cultivation and Significance

The First Coil is the beginning, not the extent, of Yuan’s later abilities. At Fleshmarket, when the Gun announces its arrival with a rain of qi-charged bullets, Yuan and Revolver each form a Barrier, creating two protective domes around themselves. The narrative presents this as a technique both had mastered early in their journeys; it does not identify the Barrier as an automatic effect of the First Coil. The later scene instead gives the awakening its wider context: the perception Yuan gains at his first breakthrough belongs to a path that will demand increasingly consequential forms of cultivation.

The First Coil’s decisive significance is the reversal it imposes on Yuan’s sense of what is possible. He had thought his status as a Scrap barred him from having a core at all. The bullet in his face, first an inexplicable mark of his return from death, becomes evidence that the boundary he trusted has already been crossed.
