Shejidan spaceport

Peacemaker

Shejidan spaceport is the intended safe endpoint of a contingency plan to protect Tabini and his household if the Bujavid becomes untenable. Fortified by Geigi and defended by Jase, it links ground-side security to the space station; reaching it would preserve the leadership and its communications, but removing the aiji from the planet would carry a heavy political cost.

Strategic Refuge and Planned Evacuation

The spaceport enters the plan as a destination to reach under threat, not as an ordinary stop. Jago’s instructions set out a chain of protection: secure the Bujavid floor, have Jase enforce security with his guard, and be prepared to move Tabini, Ilisidi, Cajeiri, and their guests down to the train station. From there, a commandeered freight train—not the Red Train—would carry them toward the spaceport, with Ilisidi’s bodyguard defending the journey and Jase responsible for the port perimeter.

The plan is explicitly conditional. Bren understands that taking Tabini off the planet would weaken the aijinate and could look like abandonment of the atevi in their crisis, with the aiji sheltering behind human weapons. The spaceport is therefore both a practical refuge and the threshold of a politically damaging last resort. Jago’s final instruction marks it as the destination if events go wrong, not the preferred course under ordinary circumstances.

Bren later makes the evacuation guidance concrete for those responsible for carrying it out: if threatened, they should not delay over whether to leave, but take the aiji, the dowager, Cajeiri, the guests, and anyone they insist on bringing to the train station. If the route is blocked, they are to remain with the train and defend their position; if they reach the spaceport, they should shut its gates and trust no one from outside the perimeter. The goal is to get everyone to the station as soon as possible and coordinate from there with Geigi.

Defenses and Command

The spaceport’s importance rests partly on the defenses already in place. Bren reports that Geigi has considerably fortified it over the preceding year, and that Jase can contact the station directly without relying on the Messengers’ Guild. If the spaceport, the people under Ilisidi’s protection, or Cajeiri’s guests face harm, Geigi has both the means and the will to act. Jase’s forces, meanwhile, are meant to defend Tabini and his party during a move to the port.

Tabini’s preparations treat control of the site as a matter of political continuity as well as physical safety. He has prepared orders placing the Bujavid guard, the transport station, and the spaceport under Ilisidi’s control if anything befalls him. Ilisidi accepts the orders, while reminding Tabini that the plan cannot ask others to avoid foolish risks while permitting him to take them. Tabini’s stated objective is to reach and hold the spaceport and its communications, avoiding a repetition of the previous crisis.

The plan also recognizes that reaching the port cannot be assumed. Bren identifies the train route as the most direct option, but warns of the possibility that someone could block the tracks. If the spaceport cannot be reached, the instructions name the Taibeni clan, the Atageini clan, or Ilisidi’s fortress at Malguri as survival alternatives. These are presented as fallback refuges; the spaceport remains the primary destination because it offers access to the station and a way to coordinate beyond the immediate ground crisis.

Communications and Wider Infrastructure

The spaceport’s strategic role depends on communication between the ground and the station. Bren stresses that this link must not rely on systems an enemy could cut off, and that Tabini would remain connected to the network and able to issue orders. The intended relationship is not simply escape from danger: it is continued command from a protected location, with Geigi able to carry out Tabini’s instructions.

That reliance on secure channels takes on added weight during the Assassins’ Guild communications overhaul. The new leadership chooses technical changes that lock out all but a selected group until their access is approved. The cleared users include the dowager’s units, those assigned to Tabini and Lord Tatiseigi, Guild Headquarters, and units placed around the Bujavid. The change causes small interruptions, but the arrangement is designed to exclude uncleared units rather than leave the former system open to hostile remnants. In the wider security plan, communication infrastructure is as consequential as the gates and guards protecting the spaceport.

The contingency also depends on Shejidan’s transport network and on the ability to control its vulnerable points. The city’s railway is part of a broader political transformation: eleven regional associations agree to build a railroad west from Shejidan without going to war, while the Transportation Guild and the Builders eventually transcend both clan and regional boundaries. This background gives the movement of people and the control of transport offices political significance beyond the mechanics of evacuation. Shejidan spaceport stands at the far end of the immediate escape plan, where transport, defense, and authority converge.
