Rachel's Return as a Zombie

Louis is at home, playing solitaire, when he hears the back door open. Slow, gritting footsteps approach him from behind. A cold hand falls on his shoulder, and Rachel's voice, now grating and full of dirt, speaks to him, calling him "Darling." The novel ends on this chilling note, implying that Louis's attempt to resurrect Rachel has succeeded, but she has returned as the same kind of monstrous, soulless entity as Gage. Louis is left to face the consequences of his actions, trapped with the thing that was once his wife.
