Lon's Suspicion

Lon Hammond Jr. tries to reach Allie at the inn, calling at seven, eight-thirty, and nine-forty-five, but there is no answer. He is the last one in his office, working on a trial. He is a successful lawyer who pays attention to details, and a small detail bothers him. He remembers something Allie's mother once said about Allie being in love with a young man from New Bern. He realizes Allie is in New Bern now, and he becomes frightened that she might be with that man. He decides he will do anything to keep her. With trembling hands, he dials the phone for the fourth time, but again there is no answer.
