Takeshi seeks DL at the Kunoichi retreat
VinelandTakeshi seeks DL at the Kunoichi Attentives Sisterhood Mountain Retreat after an unexplained, delayed injury in Tokyo leads him to California. His arrival turns DL’s search for guidance about the consequences of her Vibrating Palm technique into a direct encounter with the person affected by it. The episode brings their separate journeys together at a place DL has repeatedly returned to since adolescence, while leaving the outcome of any treatment unresolved.
Causes and Background
Takeshi’s search begins in Tokyo, after his experience at Haru no Depaato leaves him frightened and aware that something has happened to him. The following morning he tries to contact Minoru at the Antiterrorism Subministry. Instead of a clear answer, he receives evasions; callers leave him waiting, and officials suggest that the person he knew may no longer exist in the familiar form. The obstacles make his condition harder to understand, not less urgent.
He then visits a doctor on the staff of Wawazume Vita & Non-Vita, taking along the suit he describes as sick. Dr. Oruni scans the garment while Takeshi watches the results on a screen from the adjoining room. The display marks holes corresponding to warning points on Takeshi’s body. The doctor describes a corrosive, negative energy and asks whether Takeshi has been in a fight. The examination offers a physical indication of what has happened, but the explanation that follows places the cause in a different register: a technique of assassination with a delayed effect.
The account of that technique links Takeshi’s condition to the practice DL is discussing at the retreat. Its history is described as reaching back to Chinese practitioners in Malaysia before its adaptation by ninja and yakuza. The doctor’s findings and the explanation of the technique give Takeshi grounds to seek help beyond the medical encounter, though they do not, by themselves, establish that a remedy is certain.
DL Seeks Counsel
DL has also returned to California by air and gone back, in distress, to the retreat. The place is not new to her: she has come and gone since adolescence, forming a lasting relationship of affection and antagonism with the Attentives, particularly Sister Rochelle. Her return therefore combines a familiar refuge with a renewed need to face what she has done.
Sister Rochelle recognizes at once that DL is in a terrible state and initially directs her to rest in a cell, postponing their conversation until the next day. When DL makes her confession, Sister Rochelle listens despite her own frustration at being interrupted just as her business is beginning to prosper. Her reaction is not simply reassurance. She asks whether DL might have drawn back at the last instant, testing the circumstances of the act before considering what can be done next.
Sister Rochelle distinguishes the question of DL’s own life from the course of the Vibrating Palm spell affecting the other person. She tells DL that the latter’s outcome is uncertain and depends on several variables, beginning with how quickly remedies are applied. The retreat now has a medical department equipped with new therapeutic machines and staffed by two qualified nurses. Although cases of Ninja Death Caress are uncommon, Sister Rochelle says that the victim’s prospects improve with prompt admission. The advice makes timing consequential: delay matters, but the available care leaves room for hope.
Takeshi Arrives
Takeshi’s route to California is uncertain rather than triumphant. Back at his hotel after the consultation, he finds a ticket for a flight to San Francisco departing that evening and a note from Two Ton expressing regret over his misfortune and recommending that he contact an enclosed telephone number once in California. Takeshi shrugs at the prospect of what difference the journey might make, but packs and goes to Narita Airport. His small case contains enough amphetamines for two weeks, spare underwear, and a shirt.
Meanwhile, DL has been granted several days to prepare. She manages to keep away from other people’s cigarettes, stops putting her fingers in her vagina, and puts herself to sleep through self-hypnosis. These details present preparation as a difficult effort of self-command rather than as a completed solution. Before the interval can run its course, Takeshi appears at the door of the retreat, having come to find her. His arrival abruptly brings the person in need of help into the same setting where DL has been seeking counsel about the technique’s effects.
Significance and Unresolved Outcome
The meeting is structured around a gap between diagnosis and remedy. Takeshi’s examination identifies warning points and a corrosive energy; the discussion at the retreat names the delayed technique and describes medical resources; neither account confirms that Takeshi has already received treatment or recovered. The event’s decisive change is therefore access: a problem that had been obscured by official evasions and pursued through separate journeys becomes immediate and shared.
The retreat also changes function across the episode. For DL it is a recurring refuge and a place where Sister Rochelle can challenge her account as well as offer practical guidance. For Takeshi it becomes the destination reached through a referral and an uncertain flight. His arrival interrupts DL’s preparation, but the narrative does not specify what they say to one another, what care follows, or whether the treatment succeeds. The encounter closes the distance between the potential patient and the person seeking help while preserving the uncertainty that Sister Rochelle has already emphasized.
