Imprisonment and Trial

Alex is tried, convicted of murder, and sentenced to fourteen years in Staja (State Jail) Number 84F. He spends two years in prison, enduring brutal treatment from warders and other inmates. He learns that Georgie has been killed in a robbery, and that Dim and Pete have escaped. Alex adapts to prison life by becoming a model prisoner, feigning religious interest and informing on other inmates to gain favor. He works in the workshop and attends chapel, where he plays the stereo. This period of imprisonment is a time of survival and calculation for Alex, as he looks for a way to secure an early release.
