one Sunday night, two years into Alex's sentence
Killing of Cellmate
A new, boastful prisoner is placed in Alex's overcrowded cell. The man tries to share Alex's bunk and makes sexual advances. Alex and his cellmates beat the man severely. The next morning, the man is found dead. Alex's cellmates blame him for the killing, and he is held responsible. The prison governor and the Minister of the Interior visit the cell, and the Minister selects Alex as a candidate for a new experimental treatment called Ludovico's Technique. This event is the catalyst for Alex's release and his transformation into a 'cured' citizen. It also shows the brutal reality of prison life and the state's interest in using prisoners as test subjects.
