Morning Visit from P.R. Deltoid
Alex wakes up late and decides to skip school. His Post-Corrective Adviser, P.R. Deltoid, visits him at home. Deltoid warns Alex that the police are watching him and that he is close to being sent to prison. He questions Alex about the previous night's gang fight, but Alex denies involvement. Deltoid expresses frustration with the system's failure to reform young offenders. After Deltoid leaves, Alex reflects on the nature of evil, concluding that he does bad things because he enjoys them, and that the state's attempts to suppress the self are misguided. This scene introduces the theme of state control versus individual freedom and sets up Alex's future conflict with authority.
