Childhood in the Kolba

A Life of Shame and Isolation The Kolba and the Word Harami Mariam grows up in a small mud hut outside Herat with her bitter mother Nana. She learns early that she is a harami, a bastard, and that her father Jalil visits only on Thursdays. The kolba is isolated, but Mariam finds solace in Jalil's stories and gifts, and in the lessons of Mullah Faizullah. The Dream of Herat Mariam longs to see Jalil's cinema, to meet his legitimate children, and to live in Herat. She dreams of being accepted. When she finally insists on visiting Jalil's house for her fifteenth birthday, she is turned away at the gate. That same night, Nana hangs herself, seeing Mariam's departure as a betrayal. Forced Marriage Jalil and his wives hastily marry Mariam off to the much older Rasheed, a shoemaker from Kabul. Mariam is taken to a strange city, beginning a life of servitude and abuse.

Marriage to Rasheed

A Cruel Husband and Lost Pregnancies The First Years Rasheed initially shows kindness, taking Mariam around Kabul, buying her gifts. But his true nature emerges: he demands she wear a burqa, isolates her, and becomes violent. Mariam's first pregnancy ends in a miscarriage at the bathhouse, and Rasheed's grief turns to cold resentment. A Cycle of Abuse Over the years, Mariam suffers seven miscarriages. Rasheed grows increasingly cruel, beating her, forcing her to eat pebbles, and treating her as a servant. She learns to endure silently, finding no support from neighbors or family. The Arrival of Laila When a rocket destroys Laila's home, killing her parents, Rasheed takes in the orphaned girl. Mariam sees Laila as a threat. But after Laila gives birth to Aziza, and after a night when Laila defends Mariam from Rasheed's belt, a fragile bond forms between the two women.

Shared Suffering and Solidarity

Two Women Against One Man Building Trust Mariam initially resents Laila, but after Laila stands up to Rasheed's beating, they begin to share tea and confidences. Mariam learns that Laila is also a harami, and that she was tricked into marrying Rasheed after a false report of Tariq's death. Their friendship deepens as they share chores and care for Aziza. The Failed Escape Mariam agrees to Laila's plan to flee to Pakistan. They gather money and attempt to leave with a false mahram, but are caught at the bus station. The police send them back to Rasheed, who beats Mariam savagely and locks her in the toolshed, and imprisons Laila and Aziza in a dark room without food or water. Waiting for Better Days After the failed escape, Rasheed's tyranny intensifies, but Mariam and Laila become allies. Mariam finds unexpected love in Aziza, who calls her Khala Mariam. The bond between the two women becomes the only source of resilience.

The Final Act

Murder and Sacrifice Tariq's Return Laila's childhood friend and love Tariq, believed dead, returns to Kabul. He comes to the house, and Laila meets him. Zalmai, Rasheed's son, tells Rasheed, who flies into a rage. He beats Laila and begins to strangle her. Mariam's Choice Mariam, seeing Laila turning blue, runs to the toolshed, grabs a shovel, and strikes Rasheed on the head. He falls, but then sneers, and Mariam realizes he will kill them both. She raises the shovel again and finishes him. She has killed her husband. Accepting Consequences Mariam insists that Laila and the children flee with Tariq, while she stays to face the Taliban. She confesses, is tried, and executed by firing squad at Ghazi Stadium. Her final thoughts are of peace and love for those she saved.
