Melange

Melange, commonly called "the spice," is the most precious commodity in the known universe, a geriatric drug that extends human life and unlocks prescient abilities. It is found only on the desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune, where it is mined from the sands. The spice is the foundation of the Spacing Guild's monopoly on interstellar travel, the source of immense wealth for the CHOAM Company, and the object of a bitter struggle between the Great Houses. Its unique properties and scarcity make it the linchpin of the Imperium's political and economic order, and its control is the ultimate prize that drives the novel's plot.

Nature and Properties

Melange is a naturally occurring substance with a distinctive cinnamon-like odor and taste, though its flavor is said to vary with each experience. It is mildly addictive in small quantities but severely addictive when consumed in amounts above two grams daily per seventy kilograms of body weight. The spice has true geriatric properties, prolonging life and health, and it is the only known source of the awareness-spectrum narcotic that enables Guild navigators to guide spaceships through the void by seeing possible futures. For the Bene Gesserit, melange is also a Truthsayer drug, allowing trained Reverend Mothers to detect falsehood and access their "body's memory." The CHOAM Company, a universal development corporation controlled by the Emperor and the Great Houses, derives enormous profits from melange, and a CHOAM directorship is a key measure of political power. The price of melange on the open market can reach 620,000 Solaris per decagram, making it more valuable than any other substance. The Harkonnens, who held Arrakis for eighty years before the Atreides, extracted ten billion Solaris from the planet every 330 Standard days. When Duke Leto Atreides is granted the fief of Arrakis, he gains a CHOAM directorship, but the Harkonnens, with the Emperor's secret backing, plot to destroy him and regain control of the spice. The Duke recognizes that the Harkonnens have been stockpiling melange for over twenty years, intending to reduce production and blame him, thereby turning the Landsraad Houses against him.

The Spice and the Fremen

The Fremen, the native inhabitants of Arrakis, have a deep relationship with melange. They consume it as a staple of their diet, which gives them the blue-in-blue eyes and a heightened communal awareness. The spice is also central to their religious and cultural practices. The Fremen use the "Water of Life," a liquid exhalation of a dying sandworm, as a sacred drug that, when transformed by a Reverend Mother, allows them to share a collective consciousness. The spice is also the source of the Fremen's power: they bribe the Spacing Guild with a monstrous payment in spice to keep the skies of Arrakis clear of satellites, hiding their terraforming efforts from the Imperium. Paul Atreides, after fleeing into the desert, realizes that the Fremen are paying the Guild for privacy, and he uses this knowledge to understand the true power dynamics of the planet.

The Spice and Paul's Transformation

For Paul Atreides, melange is both a poison and a key to his destiny. The spice-saturated environment of Arrakis, combined with his Bene Gesserit training, triggers a profound transformation in his consciousness. He experiences prescient visions that reveal possible futures, including the terrifying prospect of a jihad waged in his name. He tells his mother, "The spice changes anyone who gets this much of it, but thanks to you, I could bring the change to consciousness." The spice is addictive, and Paul realizes that he and his mother are trapped on Arrakis because they cannot leave without taking part of the spice with them. His ability to see the future, amplified by the spice, makes him the Kwisatz Haderach, the one who can be many places at once, and ultimately enables him to challenge the Emperor and claim the throne.

The Spice as a Weapon

Paul's ultimate leverage over the Imperium is his ability to destroy the spice. He threatens to use the "Water of Death," a chain reaction that would kill the little makers and destroy all spice production on Arrakis, making the planet a true desolation. He tells the Guildsmen, "The power to destroy a thing is the absolute control over it." This threat forces the Spacing Guild to obey his commands and the Emperor to capitulate. The spice, which had been the source of the Imperium's power, becomes the instrument of its downfall. Paul's control over the spice is the foundation of his new empire, and he uses it to secure his position as Emperor, marrying Princess Irulan to legitimize his rule while keeping Chani as his true love.
