The Gom Jabbar Test

On a warm night at Castle Caladan, the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, the Emperor's Truthsayer, visits Lady Jessica and her son Paul. She administers the Gom Jabbar test, forcing Paul to place his hand in a pain box while a poisoned needle is held at his neck. Paul endures the excruciating pain without withdrawing, proving his humanity and passing the test. The Reverend Mother reveals the Bene Gesserit breeding program and hints at Paul's potential as the Kwisatz Haderach, the male who can see where no Truthsayer can. This ordeal marks the beginning of Paul's terrible purpose and sets the stage for his destiny.
