Preserved The Baron orders Hawat captured alive, wanting to turn the Mentat into a Harkonnen tool.

Poisoned Service to the Baron Latent Poison The Baron has a residual poison placed in Hawat's body with an antidote fed in meals. Hawat is told his Duke is dead and the Lady Jessica is the betrayer. Devotion and Hate Hawat serves the Baron while secretly seeking to destroy the Emperor and the Baron. He feeds the Harkonnen war machine accurate calculations. Prisoner Mind His condition makes him useful but a hostage to his own survival. The Mentat of honor is reduced to a slave.

Death Before Betrayal Emperor's Needle The Emperor sends Hawat with a poisoned needle to kill Paul. Hawat instead comes to Paul to die, exposing the Emperor's treachery. Final Loyalty He asks forgiveness from Jessica and dies in Paul's arms. His last gesture restores his honor. Legacy Paul sees the price of the Mentat's long, twisted service. Hawat's grave is one more debt owed to the Atreides.
