Charlie’s first successful fire test is a turning point in the Shop’s attempt to measure her ability: the demonstration succeeds, but its scale and volatility expose how little control the laboratory has over what it has brought into the room. Charlie makes woodchips explode, heats a tub of water to a boil, and then, when her concentration breaks, leaves the test room through a door the fleeing technician has left open. The test proves her power while undermining the observers’ confidence that it can be safely contained.
