Lundberg, the taxi driver

Firewall

Lundberg, the taxi driver, is the father of Carl-Einar Lundberg, whose past becomes central to the police’s developing theory about the taxi driver’s murder. The investigation treats the killing not only as a crime to solve but as a possible act of revenge tied to an earlier rape allegation against his son.

Identity and Family

The evidence identifies Lundberg through his work as a taxi driver and his relationship to his son, Carl-Einar. Wallander takes responsibility for following up on the son, assigning that inquiry separately from his own continuing investigation into Tynnes Falk’s life. The division of work places the taxi driver’s family connection among several leads the team is pursuing at once.

The Murder and the Suspected Motive

The investigators consider whether the taxi driver’s murder was retaliation against his son. Carl-Einar had stood trial in a rape case and been acquitted, although the police discussion notes indications that he may have been guilty. Wallander considers the possibility that Carl-Einar had committed an earlier rape as well, and that Sonja Hökberg may have been its victim; she had not reported such an assault to the police.

This remains an investigative theory rather than an established account of the crime. The discussion frames the taxi driver’s killing as revenge on the father for what the son may have done, while acknowledging that the circumstances behind the suspected attack are not fully understood. The possibility supplies a motive and changes how the investigators interpret Hökberg: they see her as potentially acting with determination in response to a past wrong.

Investigation and Uncertainty

As the theory develops, Wallander says the evidence has strengthened it beyond a working hypothesis, but he doubts that it will necessarily support a charge. He proposes leaning on Carl-Einar to see what can be learned and treats Hökberg’s responsibility for both the stabbing and the blows as plausible, based on Eva Persson’s account. He also cautions that other factors may remain unknown, leaving the motive and the precise chain of events open to further investigation.

The taxi driver’s role in the story is therefore chiefly revealed through the questions his death raises about his son and Hökberg. The police connect a family relationship, an acquittal, a possible unreported rape, and a retaliatory killing, but the evidence stops short of resolving every circumstance.
