Bike basket

The bike basket was a standard wire container, bolted to the front handlebars of Bill Denbrough's oversized Schwinn bicycle, which he called Silver. In the summer of 1958, this basket was not merely a convenience but a vital piece of equipment for the Losers' Club, carrying the tools that would be needed for their confrontations with the entity that haunted Derry.

Life-Saving Cargo

On the day Ben Hanscom first met Bill and Eddie Kaspbrak in the Barrens, Eddie suffered a severe asthma attack after Henry Bowers bloodied his nose. His aspirator was empty. Bill rode Silver at breakneck speed to the Center Street Drug Store, and upon receiving a refill from Mr. Keene, he tossed the plastic squeeze-bottle into the bike's basket. The aspirator rolled back and forth in the basket as Bill pedaled furiously back to the Barrens, the container keeping the medicine secure and accessible. This simple act of transport was the difference between life and death for Eddie, who was gasping for air when Bill returned.

A Weapon's Transit

Later that same summer, the basket carried a far more dangerous object. When Bill, Richie Tozier, and Ben Hanscom decided to confront the entity at 29 Neibolt Street, Bill brought his father's Walther PPK pistol. After the three boys retrieved the weapon from its hiding place under a bridge, Bill threw the pistol into the bike's basket alongside the play six-shooters they had been using for games. The basket held the real gun among the toys, a stark juxtaposition of childhood play and mortal danger. During the subsequent chase, when the werewolf pursued them down Neibolt Street, the pistol remained in the basket until Bill could grab it and fire, wounding the creature and allowing their escape. The basket, an ordinary object, became the carrier of both medicine and weapon, the two tools the Losers needed to survive their summer war.
