Carole Danner

Carole Danner is the young librarian working at the circulation desk of the Derry Public Library in 1985. When Ben Hanscom, now a successful architect, visits the library on a nostalgic impulse, she is the one who greets him and processes his request for a new library card. She is described as pretty, with a smile that changes her face from pretty to beautiful when she hears Ben's sentimental reason for wanting a card—to have a souvenir of his childhood in Derry. She is also the one who, after Ben's disturbing encounter with Pennywise in the library's rotunda, expresses concern for his well-being, noting that he looks terrible and offering him a place to lie down in Mr. Hanlon's office. Her interaction with Ben is marked by professional kindness and a touch of personal warmth, as she listens to his story about growing up in Derry and wanting a memento of those years. She also informs Ben that Mrs. Starrett, the former head of the Children's Library whom Ben remembered fondly, had died of a stroke three years earlier. Carole Danner is also the colleague who covers for Mike Hanlon when he needs to leave work, and she is the one who later gives Bill Denbrough the notebook that Mike had been writing in, after it was found on a table in the library. Her role is that of a helpful, observant, and sympathetic figure within the library's daily operations, a contrast to the supernatural horrors that the Losers' Club confronts.
