Refrigerator (Amana)

The Amana refrigerator, a rusted and discarded appliance, sits near the Derry dump, a seemingly ordinary piece of junk that becomes a central locus of horror for the Losers' Club. For Patrick Hockstetter, a deeply disturbed boy, the refrigerator is a private killing-bottle. He uses it to trap and slowly asphyxiate animals—cats, dogs, a pigeon—deriving a perverse excitement from their suffering. The refrigerator is his secret, a place where he enacts his psychopathic urges, and it holds a powerful, almost hypnotic fascination over him, appearing in his dreams as a giant, moonlit crypt.

The Parasitic Spawn

When Patrick returns to the refrigerator after a confrontation with Henry Bowers, he opens the door to find his latest victim, a pigeon, reduced to a skeleton. The interior is now infested with dozens of flesh-colored, shell-like parasites that unfurl insectile wings. These flying leeches attack Patrick, latching onto his skin and draining his blood with a painless but horrifying suction. They swell and burst, covering him in his own gore. The parasites drive him, screaming and panicked, into the Barrens, where he is ultimately dragged away by a shape-shifting entity—the clown, Pennywise—to be consumed in the darkness beneath Derry.

The Losers' Discovery and the Clown's Message

Later that day, Beverly Marsh, who witnessed Patrick's death, leads the other Losers back to the refrigerator. They find the area splattered with blood and the parasites gone. Bill Denbrough ties a clothesline to the refrigerator's handle and, from a safe distance, yanks it open. Instead of leeches, an avalanche of orange pompoms spills out. Written in drying blood on the inside of the door is a message: "I'LL KILL YOU ALL! YOU'LL FLOAT TOO!" This taunt, a direct echo of the clown's words to George Denbrough, confirms that the refrigerator was not just a trap for animals but a tool of It, a portal through which the monster's influence and its parasitic spawn could enter the world.
