The Crawling Eye is one of the many terrifying forms assumed by It during the Losers' Club's 1958 confrontation in the sewers beneath Derry. It manifests as a gigantic, lidless eyeball, its black pupil two feet across and its iris a muddy russet color, moving on a bed of raw, questing tentacles. This shape is drawn directly from Richie Tozier's childhood nightmares, inspired by the 1958 horror film The Crawling Eye, which had terrified him as a boy. The creature embodies the specific fear of eyes and sight that haunted Richie, who wore thick glasses and had been tormented about them by bullies like Henry Bowers.

The Attack in the Tunnel

As the Losers' Club made their way through the dark, crumbling tunnels under Derry, the Crawling Eye suddenly appeared before them, filling the passage. Its tentacles, described as branchlike and dry, reached out and began to seize the children, wrapping around their ankles, waists, and ears. Beverly felt a tentacle tighten around her ear, drawing blood as Ben Hanscom tried to pull her free. Bill Denbrough thrust his hand into the Eye's gelatinous surface, his arm disappearing up to the elbow into its wet, avid heat. The creature's touch induced a paralytic sleepiness, and the group was being dragged inexorably toward its body, their struggles growing weaker.

Eddie's Counterattack

Eddie Kaspbrak, standing frozen at first, broke his paralysis when he heard Bill scream in despair. Running forward with his broken arm flopping in its cast, he collided with Bill and slammed him aside. Drawing his aspirator, Eddie shouted "BATTERY ACID, FUCKNUTS!" and triggered a blast of mist into the Eye, pretending the medicine was corrosive acid. He kicked the Eye's cornea, his foot sinking into its jelly, and continued to fire the aspirator while screaming obscenities and defiance. The creature recoiled, mewling in pain and surprise, and its tentacles began to withdraw. Eddie's act of belief—that his asthma medicine could become acid—broke the Eye's hold on the group.

The Group's Response and Retreat

Emboldened by Eddie's attack, the others found their strength returning. Bill ripped his arm from the Eye and slammed it back in fist-first. Ben Hanscom ran into the creature, raining punches onto its quivering surface. Richie Tozier, though vomiting from the horror of punching the gristly eye, added his own blow. The combined assault forced the Crawling Eye to withdraw, its tentacles retreating into the darkness. The group was left shaken but alive, with Bill's arm covered in a thick, cloudy goo and Beverly bleeding from her ear.
