Ruby

Ruby works as a counter-girl at the Center Street Drug Store in Derry, Maine, during the summer of 1958. She is a minor figure in the lives of the Losers' Club, appearing only in the context of Eddie Kaspbrak's unsettling encounter with the pharmacist, Mr. Keene. Her role is that of a passive observer, a representative of the adult world that is both oblivious to and complicit in the town's underlying horrors.

Role in the Placebo Revelation

Ruby is present when Mr. Keene calls Eddie into his office for a private conversation. She is tasked with making two ice-cream sodas—one chocolate for Eddie, one coffee for Mr. Keene—and bringing them into the office. When she does so, she interrupts Keene's explanation of what a placebo is, providing a brief, normal interlude in an otherwise disturbing scene. After Eddie accidentally breaks his soda glass in a panic, Ruby pokes her head in to ask if everything is all right, but Mr. Keene sharply dismisses her. She rolls her eyes and closes the door, returning to her post. Later, as Eddie flees the store in distress, Ruby stares after him, her mouth open in surprise, but she does not intervene. Her presence underscores the isolation of the children in Derry; even a seemingly friendly adult like Ruby is ultimately part of a system that fails to protect or believe them.
