McCarron Park

McCarron Park is a public park in Derry, Maine, located a short walk from the Derry Public Library and the Costello Avenue Market. It serves as a gathering place for children and a site of both ordinary leisure and extraordinary terror during the summer of 1958.

Location and Ordinary Use

After school let out for the summer in June 1958, Ben Hanscom walked to McCarron Park and sat under a tree, whispering "I love Beverly Marsh" to himself and feeling light-headed and romantic. A group of boys drifted into the park and began choosing sides for a scratch baseball game, and Ben left before they could taunt him further. The park is also where Eddie Kaspbrak, fleeing from the apparition of the leper and other horrors, collapsed in a dead faint near the park's edge; some kids saw him there and steered clear, mistaking him for a wino or possibly the killer.

Role in the Losers' Club's Activities

The park is one of the ordinary Derry locations that contrasts with the supernatural dangers the Losers' Club faces. It is a place where children play baseball and enjoy summer afternoons, yet it also becomes a site of vulnerability: Eddie's collapse there underscores how the escalating terror of the summer has begun to overwhelm even the most resilient members of the group. The park's proximity to the Barrens and to the Costello Avenue Market makes it a transitional space between the mundane world of Derry and the hidden horrors beneath the town.
