Annwn
MabinogionAnnwn is the supernatural realm associated with Gwyn ap Nudd’s charge over a brood of devils. In the conditions set for Culhwch’s pursuit of Twrch Trwyth, it marks the limit of what a hunter can obtain: Gwyn is required for the hunt, but cannot be taken away from the duty entrusted to him there.
Annwn and Gwyn ap Nudd
Annwn appears as the domain in which Gwyn ap Nudd has been placed over a brood of devils. The account makes his presence there more than a matter of residence: he has been assigned a protective charge, since the devils might otherwise destroy the present race. His authority in Annwn is thus bound to the safety of the world beyond it.
The Hunt for Twrch Trwyth
Annwn enters the narrative through a condition imposed on Culhwch’s quest. Yspaddaden Penkawr declares that Twrch Trwyth cannot be hunted without Gwyn ap Nudd, yet Gwyn cannot be spared from Annwn. The demand makes the hunt depend on a figure whose necessary service elsewhere prevents him from being treated as an ordinary recruit.
The next condition sharpens the difficulty: no horse can carry Gwyn to the hunt except Du, the horse of Mor of Oerveddawg. Annwn is therefore part of a chain of extraordinary requirements, linking the boar hunt to Gwyn’s guardianship and to the exceptional means needed to bring him into the pursuit.
Narrative Significance
The passage defines Annwn through responsibility and constraint rather than through a description of its geography. Its importance lies in the duty assigned there: Gwyn’s role helps keep the devils from destroying the present race, and that same role makes his help difficult to secure. Annwn consequently gives the quest a larger supernatural stake than the capture of a formidable boar alone.
