Rhuddlan Teivi

Mabinogion

Rhuddlan Teivi, in Ceredigiawn, is identified as the site of Pryderi’s palace and the courtly encounter in which Gwydion arrives disguised as a bard. Its brief appearance anchors a negotiation over the swine sent from Annwn and gives Gwydion’s verbal skill a setting in which to shape Pryderi’s response.

Identification and Setting

The narrative names Rhuddlan Teivi as the place where Pryderi’s palace stood. Gwydion, Gilvaethwy, and ten other men travel there in the guise of bards, making the palace the destination of a planned visit rather than a chance meeting.

The Bardic Reception

Pryderi’s household receives the visitors joyfully, and Gwydion is seated beside Pryderi that night. When Pryderi asks for a tale, Gwydion invokes the custom that the chief of song should recite on the first night at a great man’s court. His storytelling entertains the whole court and pleases Pryderi, establishing a warm, hospitable atmosphere before Gwydion reveals the purpose of the visit.

The Swine Negotiation

After winning Pryderi’s attention with his tales, Gwydion asks whether Pryderi would prefer another person to state the visitors’ errand. He then requests the animals sent to Pryderi from Annwn. Pryderi explains that a covenant with his land prevents the swine from leaving until they have produced twice their number there. Gwydion proposes neither an immediate grant nor a refusal, but asks Pryderi to wait until the following day, when he promises to show him an exchange. The palace setting thus brings hospitality and negotiation together: the visitors’ welcome gives Gwydion access to the ruler, while the covenant defines the obstacle his proposal must address.

Narrative Significance

Rhuddlan Teivi is distinguished in this episode by its role as a courtly setting, not by a description of its architecture or surrounding landscape. The action moves from the visitors’ arrival, through Gwydion’s performance as a storyteller, to the request for the swine. That progression makes the palace the scene where entertainment becomes diplomacy and where Gwydion’s promised exchange opens the next stage of the plot.
