Cardiff

Mabinogion

Cardiff is named retrospectively as the town where the Sparrow-Hawk tournament in Geraint’s story took place. Its significance in the narrative comes from the contest staged there: Geraint’s defense of a maiden’s claim to the prize leads to his violent encounter with Edeyrn and, afterward, to a reckoning at Arthur’s court.

Cardiff and the Tournament

Edeyrn identifies the town as the place where he and Geraint contended for the Sparrow-Hawk. Geraint had arrived with three companions: an aged, hoary-headed man, an older woman, and a young maiden dressed in worn garments. He entered the tournament to support that maiden’s claim, maintaining that she had a better right to the Sparrow-Hawk than the maiden accompanying Edeyrn. The town is thus fixed in the story through a public contest over whose claim would be recognized.

Geraint and Edeyrn

The dispute became a direct combat between Geraint and Edeyrn. Edeyrn later described the encounter as leaving him in severe trouble, with wounds he could scarcely bear; he acknowledged that Geraint had prevailed and that the fault lay with himself. His account makes the tournament more than a contest for a prize: it is the point at which Geraint answers an insult to the maiden and defeats the man responsible for it.

The Aftermath at Arthur’s Court

Edeyrn came to Arthur’s court bearing battered armor marked by blood and accompanied by the dwarf involved in the insult. He reported that Geraint had compelled him to appear before Gwenhwyvar and do justice for the maiden, while forgiving the offense against himself. Gwenhwyvar agreed to mercy, and Arthur ordered that Edeyrn receive medical care; if he survived, the court would determine what satisfaction was due. Cardiff’s place in the episode is therefore remembered through consequences that reach beyond the tournament: Edeyrn’s defeat becomes a test of justice, mercy, and the obligations of Arthur’s court.
