Penllyn

Mabinogion

Penllyn is a territory brought under Gronw Pebyr’s rule after he takes power in Ardudwy. It later serves as the place to which Gronw withdraws and from which he sends envoys to Llew Llaw Gyffes, linking the territory to the aftermath of Llew’s wounding and the attempt to settle their conflict.

Rule Alongside Ardudwy

After Llew is struck and disappears, Gronw takes possession of Ardudwy and rules there. The account states that both Ardudwy and Penllyn come under his sway, placing Penllyn within the extent of his acquired power without describing its boundaries or administration.

Gronw’s Retreat and Embassy

Following the pursuit of Blodeuwedd and her transformation, Gronw withdraws to Penllyn. From there he dispatches an embassy to Llew, asking whether Llew will accept land, a domain, gold, or silver in recompense for the injury. Llew refuses these offers and instead demands that Gronw stand where Llew had stood when he was wounded, while Llew takes aim at him in return.

Place in the Conflict

Penllyn’s narrative significance comes from its association with Gronw’s rule and his effort to negotiate from a position of retreat. The proposed compensation does not resolve the conflict: Gronw’s warriors refuse to take the blow in his place, and Gronw agrees to face Llew himself. The account thus connects Penllyn to the transition from Gronw’s territorial ascendancy to the personal reckoning demanded by Llew.
