Cardigan Region

Mabinogion

Cardigan Region is a four-cantref territory within Pryderi’s southern dominion, and one of the lands whose boundaries and names connect political geography with the adventures of the Mabinogi. Its clearest local landmark is Pryderi’s palace at Rhuddlan Teivi; its roads also preserve, in the story, the passage of Gwydion and the swine he obtained by deception.

Place and Territorial Extent

The accounts place Cardigan Region among the southern territories ruled by Pryderi, son of Pwyll. One description says that he added its four cantrevs, together with the three cantrevs of Ystrad Tywi, to his seven cantrevs of Dyved; the combined additions were called the Seven Cantrevs of Seissyllwch. A later account describes Pryderi as lord of the twenty-one cantrevs of the South: seven in Dyved, seven in Morganwc, four in Cardigan Region, and three in Ystrad Tywi. Together these descriptions present the region both as a distinct four-cantref unit and as part of a wider southern realm.

Pryderi’s Palace at Rhuddlan Teivi

At Rhuddlan Teivi, within Cardigan Region, stood Pryderi’s palace. Gwydion, his brother Gilvaethwy, and ten companions arrived there disguised as bards while seeking the swine that had been sent to Pryderi from Annwn. They were welcomed at court, and Gwydion’s storytelling entertained the company before he revealed his request. Pryderi explained that an agreement with his land prevented him from giving away the animals until they had doubled in number. The palace thus becomes the setting for a meeting between hospitality and political obligation—and for the deception that sets the fugitives’ journey in motion.

Roads and Remembered Place-Names

After Pryderi accepted Gwydion’s counterfeit exchange of horses, greyhounds, and gilded shields for the swine, Gwydion’s party hurried away, knowing the illusion would last only until the same hour the next day. They crossed the upper part of Cardigan Region and stopped at a place thereafter called Mochdrev. Their onward route continued through Melenydd to another Mochdrev, between Keri and Arwystli, then to Mochnant in Powys and a further place in the Cantrev of Rhos also called Mochdrev. The chain of names turns the hurried escape into a trace on the landscape: the swine’s passage is remembered through settlements whose names the narrative associates with it.

Narrative and Political Significance

Cardigan Region is not presented through an extended description of its terrain; it is defined instead by cantref counts, royal jurisdiction, a court, and routes linking it to neighboring territories. Those references make it part of the political map of Pryderi’s rule while also giving the swine episode a specific geography. The regional names record both administrative division and narrative movement, bringing the scale of a kingdom down to the palace where the bargain was made and the places where the stolen animals were driven onward.
