Ystrad Tywi
MabinogionYstrad Tywi is a territorial unit in the southern lands of the Mabinogion, identified by its three cantrefs and its place within Pryderi’s expanding dominion. Its significance in the surviving account is chiefly political and administrative: it helps define the extent of his rule and the larger territorial divisions of the South.
Definition and Extent
Ystrad Tywi is counted as three cantrevs. The account places it alongside Dyved and the four cantrevs of the Cardigan Region in describing the lands Pryderi added to his rule. Together, these additions were called the Seven Cantrevs of Seissyllwch.
Place in Pryderi’s Dominion
Pryderi first ruled the seven cantrevs of Dyved. He later added the three cantrevs of Ystrad Tywi and the four of the Cardigan Region, extending his authority beyond his original territory. The narrative presents this expansion as part of his prosperous reign and notes that he was beloved both by his own people and by those around him.
The Southern Cantrefs
A later territorial description places Pryderi over the one-and-twenty cantrefs of the South: seven in Dyved, seven in Morganwc, four in Ceredigiawn, and three in Ystrad Tywi. This enumeration makes Ystrad Tywi one component of a wider southern political geography, distinct from the seven cantrevs of Dyved that formed Pryderi’s initial domain.
Narrative Significance
The account gives no local scene or boundary description for Ystrad Tywi; instead, the place is made legible through its count and its relation to royal rule. Its recurrence in two descriptions of Pryderi’s lands connects the earlier report of territorial expansion with the later, broader reckoning of the South. In this way, Ystrad Tywi helps establish the scale of Pryderi’s sovereignty without becoming the setting of a separately described episode.
