Edeyrnion
MabinogionEdeyrnion serves as the base for a temporary governing delegation during Bendigeid Fran’s expedition to Ireland: seven ministers are stationed there, with Caradawc, Bendigeid Fran’s son, as their chief.
Setting and Function
As Bendigeid Fran’s forces prepared to cross to Ireland, the council resolved to leave seven men behind as princes. The narrative places them in Edeyrnion and says the seven knights were stationed in its town, making the place the setting for this temporary arrangement of rule.
The Delegation
Caradawc leads the seven, whose other members are Hefeydd Hir, Unic Glew Ysgwyd, Iddic son of Anarawc Gwalltgrwn, Fodor son of Ervyll, Gwlch Minascwrn, and Llassar son of Llaesar Llaesgygwyd. Pendaran Dyved accompanies them as a young page. Together, the seven are described as ministers charged with taking care of the island while the expedition is away.
Narrative Role
Edeyrnion marks the point where the story makes the consequences of Bendigeid Fran’s departure explicit: the campaign does not leave the island without appointed leadership. The delegation’s placement, and Caradawc’s position at its head, provide a compact account of how authority is maintained at home while the king and his host proceed to Ireland.
