Caer Badou
MabinogionCaer Badou, also called Badon, is presented as the destination of Arthur’s host on its way to a promised battle. The narrative places the army below Caer Badou during its advance, making the location both a military objective and the setting for a brief disruption of the host’s order.
Identification and Setting
The name Badon occurs in the announcement that a vast host had promised to be at the battle there by midday, fighting Osla Gyllellvawr. Caer Badou is named shortly afterward as the place below which Arthur and his army dismount. Together, these references associate the march and its anticipated battle with the same named locality, while distinguishing the battle destination from the precise spot where the army halts: the host dismounts below Caer Badou.
The March Toward Badon
Caradawc Vreichvras calls attention to the tension between the host’s present position and its deadline: the assembled force is so large that it occupies a narrow space, yet some of its members had promised to reach Badon by midday. He declares that he will proceed whether or not Arthur chooses to do so. Arthur accepts the proposal and orders the company to go together. The place thus enters the narrative as the endpoint of an urgent collective advance, not as a site where the battle itself is shown taking place.
The Halt Below Caer Badou
After the host has moved forward and overtaken them, Arthur and his army dismount below Caer Badou. The halt becomes the setting for a sudden disturbance: the troops shift from the flanks toward the centre and from the centre toward the sides as Kai rides among them. Iddawc Cordd Prydain explains that the movement reflects the men’s eagerness to see Kai and their response to his horse, rather than a flight from battle. The appearance of Arthur’s sword, carried by Kadwr, Earl of Cornwall, quiets the host and ends the tumult. Caer Badou is therefore associated not only with the army’s intended battle but also with a moment in which spectacle unsettles its formation and Arthur’s authority restores calm.
