Earth

Memory

Earth enters the account through recollection rather than a scene set on the planet. Its references connect Miles Vorkosigan’s earlier service and Duv Galeni’s family history to the unraveling of Ser Galen’s Komarran conspiracy.

Earth in Illyan’s recollections

When Miles asks Simon Illyan what he remembers about the prokaryote sample, Illyan can recall many earlier events but finds a blank around the sample itself. Among the memories he does retain is Miles’s report from Earth, which he remembers as an outstanding example of its literary genre. He places it before Miles’s Sector Four adventure, in which Miles broke both arms. Earth thus appears in Illyan’s account as a point in Miles’s remembered chronology, not as a described landscape or visited location.

A meeting before the plot collapsed

Earth also figures in the evidence concerning Duv Galeni. Lucas Haroche points out that Galeni met his father, Ser Galen, on Earth shortly before the original Komarran plot came to grief. The meeting gives Earth a specific connection to the conspiracy’s history, although the account supplies no details of where on the planet it occurred or what was said there.

Narrative significance

These brief references give Earth two distinct associations: Miles’s report and the meeting between Galeni and his father. Together, they situate personal and political histories within the wider chronology of the investigation. The evidence does not develop Earth as a setting in its own right; its significance lies in the events and recollections attached to it.
