Komarr, where Miles and Quinn discuss their futures

Memory

Komarr, where Miles and Quinn discuss their futures, is the setting for an intimate meeting between Miles Vorkosigan and Elli Quinn, where a long-delayed explanation gives personal weight to the changes in Miles’s life. The location’s importance lies in this conversation and in the transition it frames: after the meeting, Miles returns to Barrayar and to the familiar household rhythms of Vorkosigan House.

Setting and Meeting

Miles and Elli meet in a hostel suite on Komarr. Before settling down, they consider eating in the restaurant or ordering room service; Elli chooses room service and asks for explanations. Miles uses the hostel’s enormous menu to delay while he tries once more to organize thoughts he has been composing for weeks. They sit facing one another on a smaller couch, making the private suite the scene for a conversation that has become difficult to put off.

The Conversation

Miles explains that describing his new job requires telling Elli how he obtained it and why Simon Illyan is no longer Chief of ImpSec. He recounts the preceding months, beginning with Simon Illyan’s breakdown, then doubling back to explain Laisa Toscane and Duv Galeni’s part in the story. His account gathers momentum as he describes exposing Lucas Haroche, and also covers his seizure treatment and Gregor’s offer of a job. The arrival of the meal interrupts Elli’s immediate response, leaving her tense and reflective.

The conversation distinguishes between recounting events and explaining what they meant to Miles. He can lay out the facts, but struggles to convey his inner journey, conscious that Elli is not Barrayaran. Komarr is therefore more than a stop on a journey: within the scene, it is where an account of public events meets the difficulty of making private change understood.

Departure and Significance

Miles’s return from Komarr to Barrayar is uneventful. He arrives at Vorkosigan House on a quiet late-winter evening to find the house warm, lit, and ready for him. The contrast is understated but pointed: the hostel suite has held a consequential conversation with Elli, while home offers Miles a return to ordinary company and routine.

That first evening, Miles eats in the kitchen with his Armsman and Ma Kosti rather than keeping to his formal role. His jokes make the cook laugh, and she playfully snaps at him with a towel; Pym is amused. Corporal Kosti joins them after his guard shift, is fed, and plays with the kittens near the stove. The domestic scene, followed by Miles’s decision to open a recent bottle of wine rather than drink a spoiled heirloom for symbolism’s sake, gives the return a concrete shape: Komarr marks an important conversation, while the journey back leads into a present built from familiar people and choices.
