Zoave Twilight

Memory

Zoave Twilight is the planet whose registry marks the hijacked freighter at the center of a Dendarii Fleet rescue operation. The mission brings the planet into contact with Barrayaran interests: the fleet recovers a courier and the freighter’s crew, then settles the case with local governments, an insurer, and the Barrayaran Embassy.

Setting and the Hijacking

A group of hijackers had seized an unarmed freighter registered to Zoave Twilight. Among what they took was a Barrayaran Imperial Courier, Lieutenant Vorberg, who was covertly carrying credit chits and important diplomatic information. Rather than return him and his packets, the hijackers attempted to sell him to the highest bidder, turning a local act of piracy into a matter of concern for the Barrayaran Empire.

The Barrayaran Imperial Security chief Simon Illyan assigned the recovery operation to Miles Vorkosigan, acting through his cover as Admiral Naismith and the Dendarii Free Mercenary Fleet. Although the fleet’s official sponsor was the insurance company covering the Zoave Twilight freighter, the Empire also backed the mission. The operation was intended not only to retrieve Vorberg alive but to protect future couriers by making clear that interference with them could bring an imperial response.

The Operation’s Aftermath

After the operation, the Peregrine, the Ariel, and the rest of Admiral Naismith’s selected battle group orbited Zoave Twilight. The freighter and its crew had been returned to the insurance company, which settled its account with the fleet. The fleet also sought salvage fees for the hijackers’ captured ships and filed bounty claims with the Vega Station Embassy.

The captured ex-hijackers were delivered downside for the Vegan and Zoavan governments to divide between them. Dendarii recordings of their interrogations were included in Miles’s report to Simon Illyan, while the governments received an edited version with Barrayara-specific questions and answers removed. The interrogation evidence did not establish that the courier’s kidnapping had been deliberate: it might have been an accidental consequence of the hijacking. Because the suspected leaders had been killed, however, the possibility could not be ruled out, and the investigation’s remaining lead ran through House Hargraves representatives who had handled attempts to sell or ransom the courier.

A Point of Contact

Zoave Twilight links a private commercial loss to a wider imperial security concern. The freighter’s registry identifies the ship’s connection to the planet, while the division of prisoners and the return of the crew place the local governments in the practical aftermath of the rescue. At the same time, the Barrayaran Embassy’s interim payment to the fleet shows the operation’s continuing institutional ties: delivered aboard the Peregrine in a code-locked case by Elli Quinn, the credit chit helped ensure that the Dendarii Fleet would not run short of resources before its work was complete.
