Vega Station

Memory

Vega Station is connected to the aftermath of the hijacking that brought the Dendarii into conflict with the perpetrators of the Solera massacre. Its offered reward gives the fleet a financial stake in identifying the hijackers, while the records of the operation also make the station a recipient of evidence gathered during their capture and interrogation.

Role in the Hijacking Aftermath

When Miles Vorkosigan learned that the Dendarii had rescued the hijacked ship’s entire crew and captured the hijackers’ larger vessel, he considered whether the prisoners were the same group suspected of taking the Solera the previous year and murdering its passengers and crew. He noted that Vega Station would pay a reward for the perpetrators, and that it offered the same amount for proof of their deaths. The prospect of a claim for the same mission through either outcome made careful documentation important; Miles ordered the fleet to record everything and demand surrender before deciding whether to capture or destroy the remaining fugitives.

Bounties and Evidence

The Dendarii’s later accounting included the official bounty claims filed with the Vega Station Embassy. Miles entered those claims, along with insurance settlements and salvage fees, into the operation’s financial report. The bounty was thus part of a wider accounting of the rescue and capture, not merely a prospective reward: the fleet documented its costs and returns while preserving a record of what had happened.

Prisoners and Governmental Handover

After the operation, the prisoners were delivered to the Vegan and Zoavan governments to divide between them. Copies of the Dendarii recordings of their interrogations were included in the report; the governments below were to receive an edited version, with most queries and answers specific to Barrayar removed. The available account establishes Vega Station’s connection to the bounty and to this evidence-handling process, but does not describe the station itself as a location where the rescue, interrogation, or prisoner transfer took place.
