The Accusations
The students accuse Ted of cheating, hypocrisy, and cruelty. They list his sins: looking at answer sheets, quitting football, his mother's alcoholism, and his treatment of Sandra.
The Unanimity
Even Carol Granger, the valedictorian, participates. The class is united against Ted.

The Ripping of Clothes
Ted's shirt is ripped off. Ink is poured on his hair. His foot is broken. He is bitten on the nose. The students surround him, pinching and hitting.
The Psychological Breakdown
Ted begins to weep and babble. He is reduced to a catatonic state. The class's violence is both ritualistic and savage.
The Aftermath
Ted is left drooling and unresponsive. Charlie unloads his gun and waits for the police. The attack is the culmination of the day's events.
