Christine Daae, a little-known understudy, is called to sing the role of Margarita in Faust. She delivers a performance that astonishes the audience, singing with a power and beauty never heard before. The house erupts in applause, and Christine faints from the emotional strain. The Mystery of Her Talent Christine's sudden genius is inexplicable. She had been a mediocre student at the Conservatoire and had never shown such ability. The subscribers are baffled, and rumors begin to circulate. Christine herself seems dazed and frightened by her own success. She is carried to her dressing-room, where the first seeds of her secret relationship with the Voice are planted. The Aftermath Christine's triumph marks the beginning of her fame but also the start of her entanglement with the Opera Ghost. The Voice, which she believes to be the Angel of Music promised by her father, has been giving her secret lessons. The gala performance is the Voice's first public demonstration of her training.

The Voice's Lessons The First Encounter Christine begins hearing a beautiful male voice in her dressing-room. The voice claims to be the Angel of Music sent by her deceased father. It offers to teach her and she accepts. The lessons are conducted in secret, with the voice singing from behind the wall. Christine's voice improves dramatically, but she never sees the source of the voice. The Jealousy of the Voice When Christine meets Raoul de Chagny again, the Voice becomes jealous. It demands that she renounce any earthly love. Christine, torn between her growing affection for Raoul and her devotion to the Voice, promises to love only the Voice. This leads to the Voice's demand that she go to Perros to pray at her father's grave. The Revelation at Perros Christine travels to Perros-Guirec, where she meets Raoul. She tells him about the Voice, but he is skeptical. That night, in the churchyard, she hears the Voice playing her father's violin, performing The Resurrection of Lazarus. Raoul sees a death's head and realizes the Voice is a real, sinister presence.

Abduction Onstage The Performance of Faust Christine is scheduled to sing Margarita again. She has agreed to elope with Raoul after the performance. During the Prison Act, as she sings the invocation to the angels, the stage suddenly goes dark. When the lights come back, Christine has vanished. The audience erupts in panic, and the performance is halted. The Investigation The commissary of police, M. Mifroid, is called. He questions everyone, including Raoul, who accuses the Opera Ghost. The managers are found locked in their office, obsessed with a safety-pin. The gas-man Mauclair and his assistants are found drugged. The investigation reveals that Christine was taken through a trap-door. The Persian's Intervention Raoul encounters the Persian, who knows the ghost's secrets. The Persian agrees to help Raoul rescue Christine. They arm themselves with pistols and descend into the cellars, following the secret passage that leads to the ghost's house on the lake.
