The Ultimatum

The Ultimatum Erik's Desperate Plea Erik gives Christine an ultimatum: she must marry him by eleven o'clock the next evening, or he will destroy the Opera and everyone in it. He shows her the two caskets: one containing a scorpion (yes) and one a grasshopper (no). Turning the grasshopper will trigger the explosion. Christine's Dilemma Christine is torn between her love for Raoul and her pity for Erik. She knows that Erik's rage is genuine and that he has the power to carry out his threat. She tries to reason with him, but he is beyond reason. He locks her in the Louis-Philippe Room and leaves her to decide. The Intervention of the Prisoners Raoul and the Persian, trapped in the torture chamber, hear the conversation. They shout to Christine, telling her to turn the scorpion. But the Persian suspects a trick: perhaps the scorpion also triggers an explosion. Christine hesitates as the minutes tick away.

The Choice The Final Moment Erik returns and gives Christine two minutes to decide. He opens the caskets. Christine, terrified, asks him to swear that the scorpion means safety. He agrees, but his laughter is sinister. She turns the scorpion. The Flood Instead of an explosion, water begins to flood the torture chamber. The gunpowder is soaked. Erik has kept his word: the scorpion opened the floodgates of the lake. The water rises, nearly drowning Raoul and the Persian, but eventually recedes. Erik's Renunciation Christine, seeing that Erik has spared them, shows him compassion. She kisses his forehead. Overwhelmed, Erik releases Raoul and allows the lovers to go. He gives Christine his gold ring and asks her to bury him with it when he dies. He later dies of love, and Christine keeps her promise.

Erik's Death and Legacy The Final Visit Erik visits the Persian to say goodbye. He confesses his love for Christine and his intention to die. He tells the Persian that Christine and Raoul have gone north to be married. He leaves behind Christine's papers and a promise to advertise his death in the Epoque. The Discovery of the Skeleton Years later, the narrator learns that Erik's skeleton was found in the cellars, near the well where he first took Christine. The skeleton wears a plain gold ring, placed there by Christine. The narrator identifies it as the Opera ghost. The Archives of the Opera The narrator gathers all the evidence: the Persian's manuscript, Christine's letters, and the testimony of witnesses. He deposits them in the archives of the Opera. The story of the Phantom of the Opera is preserved as a true, tragic history.
