The Opening Gambit The Ghost Demands The ghost sends letters demanding the reservation of Box Five and a monthly allowance. The managers refuse to believe and retaliate by selling the box. The ghost responds with harassment. The Escalation The ghost disrupts performances, causes the chandelier to fall, and steals the money from Richard's pocket. Each incident increases the managers' fear and desperation. The Stalemate The managers eventually comply with the ghost's demands, but they are humiliated. The conflict is resolved when the ghost returns the money, but the managers are forever changed.
