Evening of the third day on the iceberg

Rowland's prayer and the rescue

As the moon rises, Rowland, feeling utterly alone, prays to the God he has denied, begging for the child's life and the mother's safety. As he rises from his knees, he sees the flying-jib of a bark appearing around the corner of the ice. The bark, the Peerless, comes into view, and Rowland hails it. The crew rescues him and the child. Rowland mutters to himself, questioning whether his prayer was answered. This event is the climax of Rowland's spiritual journey and leads to their rescue.
