Six months after Rowland's appointment
The letter from Mrs. Selfridge
Rowland receives a letter from Mrs. Selfridge, who has been watching his progress. She writes that Myra asks for him continually and cries, and she can bear it no longer. She asks him to come and see Myra. The novel ends with the line: 'And the man went to see Myra.' This final event suggests a possible reconciliation and the healing of old wounds, as Rowland is finally reunited with the child he saved and the woman he once loved.
