Christmas at Finch's Landing

The Finch family gathers at Finch's Landing for Christmas. Scout and Jem receive air rifles from Atticus via Uncle Jack. Scout's cousin Francis taunts her, calling Atticus a 'nigger-lover' and saying he is ruining the family. Enraged, Scout attacks Francis, splitting her knuckle on his teeth. Uncle Jack spanks her without hearing her side. Later, Scout explains that Francis provoked her by insulting Atticus. Uncle Jack promises not to tell Atticus the real reason for the fight. That night, Scout overhears Atticus telling Uncle Jack about the upcoming trial and his hope that his children will come to him for answers rather than listening to the town.
