The Knot-Hole Gifts Begin
Scout and Jem discover a series of small treasures left for them in the knot-hole of a tree on the Radley property. The first items are two soap dolls carved to resemble the children themselves, followed by chewing gum, a tarnished spelling medal, and a broken pocket watch with a chain and knife. The children are delighted and intrigued, speculating about the identity of the secret gift-giver. Jem suspects it might be someone who watches them from the Radley house, but he keeps his thoughts mostly to himself. The gifts create a sense of mystery and connection to the reclusive Boo Radley, whom they have never seen.
