Visit to First Purchase Church
Calpurnia takes Jem and Scout to her church, First Purchase African M.E. Church. They are initially confronted by Lula, who objects to white children attending. Zeebo and Reverend Sykes welcome them warmly. The service is different from what the children are used to: there are no hymn-books, and the congregation sings by 'lining'—Zeebo reads a line and the congregation repeats it. Reverend Sykes takes up a collection for Tom Robinson's wife, Helen, and locks the doors until ten dollars is raised. Afterward, Calpurnia explains that most of the congregation cannot read, and she teaches Zeebo from Blackstone's Commentaries. Scout realizes Calpurnia leads a double life, speaking differently at home and in her community.
